Community Edition of Obseron?
Hi team,
I trialled Ksenos a few years ago and was impressed by the interface. It is good to see that it is still a well designed piece of software.
Unlike your traditional customers, I'm a much smaller startup who wants a good, reliable VMS that has a nice UI - that is not developed in China. I'm not at all a fan of poorly designed software like Blue Iris and I /hate/ with a passion this industries 'per camera' licensing model.. it is literally the reason so many new entrants pop up in this market every year.
Because of the 'per camera' licensing model, a lot of small businesses / startups like mine end up investing in hardware solutions with no camera limits or proprietary cloud based solutions because they offer simplicity. However you have no idea how your footage is being managed from a privacy perspective with these cloud solutions and so they are a bad solution.
My feature request - if you can call it that - is to ask whether you have considered or were considering releasing a community edition of the software for non-enterprise / small businesses to use? You could limit the cameras to something like 8 streams? Or rather, limit some of the other functionality instead?
The idea behind community editions is to get market share, create a following, and build a community of enthusiasts (like me) who support each other.
If IT influencers are using the community edition in their homes, consultancies, or in schools etc - that typically results in them recommending that solution to others, directly, indirectly, via social media / Facebook groups etc.
It is also a win-win-win for enterprise software - as the community edition ends up becoming the test bed of new features and with self-support, so that your expertise / professional services and resources are available and valued by your enterprise clients.
Most importantly it doesn't devalue your primary offering - in fact, it strengthens it's perceived market value.
Just food for thought!
